Inspired by social media posts, AMAZING BLACK WOMEN – You’ve (probably) Never Heard of… is a humble attempt to honor a few women that I (and many others) had never heard of before.

 

THIS SERIES IS DEDICATED TO DOROTHY F. WALKER – my mother – and ALL the Amazing Black Women we’ve never heard of.

fredi washington

(1903 – 1994)

ACTRESS

 American stage and film actress, civil rights activist, performer, and writer. Washington was of African American descent and was one of the first Black Americans to gain recognition for film and stage work in the 1920s and 1930s.

alice H. parkeR

(1895 – 1920)

INVENTOR

An American inventor who was active in the early 1900s. She is an African American woman, known for her patent for a heating furnace using natural gas. 

dr. patricia Era bath

 (1942 –  2019)

ophthalmologist

An American ophthalmologist and humanitarian.  Dr. Bath was the first African-American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical purpose.  A holder of five patents,  she founded the nonprofit American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness in Washington, D.C.

miriam elizabeth benjamin

(1861 – 1947)

TEACHER

An American schoolteacher and inventor. In 1888, she obtained a patent for the Gong and Signal Chair for Hotels, becoming the second African American woman to receive a patent.
